Talk Radio

          Government officials, talk radio hosts, bloggers, and anyone with people who listen to them have a tremendous power and responsibilty.  If a congressman says something stupid, people tend to judge him quickly. Sometimes they go as far as to judge his whole political party. When everything you say can effect the perception of a large group of people, you have responsibility not to sound like an idiot.
          Talk radio hosts like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbauh, and Matt Mittan have thousands of followers. When an issue comes up in congress or with the president everyone looks to them. They want to know what these guys have to say. They can actually influence public opinion just by taking a stand on an issue. Talk radio hosts like Rush that are very conservative, have lots of liberal viewers as well. Liberals listen/watch Rush's/caller's positions and uses them to prepare their arguements in advance of questions/attacks. Because Rush is aware that liberals are listening/watching he is sometimes afraid to take a position.
          There are 3 problems with the way people of influence use their words. The first is that some poeple understand the power of their words too well. They use their words to prevoke reactions from people. For example, I could tell one friend that another talked bad about them. I can use the hurt persons feelings to get them to lash out at this other person. All it takes is a few cafefully chosen words.  They have that much power. Many goverment officials are well versed in manipulating people this way. The second problem is when people don't understand the power of their words and they say stupid stuff.  They don't realize that an uneducated voice can influence people as well. Any action that results from uneducated words and thought processes leads to more stupidity. Lastly, because people don't realize the power of their words, they also don't understand their value. When words lose their value there is no reason to choose them wisely or to tell the truth. People have forgotten that, "Your word is your bond." The false words of many government officials are a clear indication of it's corruption. However, there is also a growing trend in the media to simply bend or exaggerate the meaning of their words.
          As with any change in humanity's character, if we intend to change people's thought process about the use of their words, we have to do it one person at a time. So choose your words carefully!

Crazy

           People have always thought that I was crazy. I remember getting in big trouble my last year of high school. I did something very stupid to try to be cool to people that didn't like me.  I wrote a paper about what I did and why. I read the paper aloud in class with those same people. Afterwards someone who was not in that group but not really my friend came up and hugged me. She thanked me for showing that I was normal. She had thought that I was a perfect brown noser with no emotions. My dad is very sick with ALS. Recently a friend stopped me to tell me I inspired her because I was able to face each day without being an emotional wreck. I imagine the girl who hugged me would think that I was not upset about my father. However, my friend at work knows me well enough to realize the truth.
           The truth is that I care very much and I am deeply hurt to see my dad in such pain. Despite those emotions I have the sense to know the things I can and cannot control. I still have a great many blessings in my life. I also know that every change I go through is just leading me into a new chapter in my life.
          I believe that I am called to do something that will change many lives for the better. I'm not sure exactly how yet but each day I look forward to discovering that purpose. My happiness is controlled by that internal motivation and not by external circumstances. For example, The other day I was at work stocking paper goods. I had already been yanked to several places. Then they asked me to run a register. Like most people initially my temper was high. I felt like crying and I was bad mouthing the manager on the way to the register. When I realized how upset I was, I stopped to think about why. I made a conscience decision not to let my happiness be determined by circumstances. I went to the register, talked to the customers, and found a way to be happy.
          The only things that I can control are my attitude and my actions. If I could go back to high school and talk to the girl who hugged me, I would tell her what I am telling you. The only things that I can control are my attitude and my actions. When I was walking to the register I was making a decision to change my attitude. I changed my attitude by changing what that little voice in my head is saying. I was changing my words. At first I was saying, "I hate running a register. I'll never finish the paper goods cart. This is keeping me away from the job in toys that I was supposed to do today. I will be up here all day and then get in trouble for having overtime." I changed my words to say, "I will go run a register till it is time to go. I will do it as well as I do everything else. I will be joking and happy with customers." So maybe I seem crazy to most people but in truth I am just learning the serenity prayer.
          

God, grant me the serenity

Old MySpace Blog

          I had a blog on myspace but now I can't get into my account. I wanted people to be able to see the last post on myspace. So I am copying and pasting the content here.


          I think people have changed their perception of America. It was intended to be inclusive and tolerant of everyone. People that needed to seek refuge could find a safe place to rebuild their life.  They could practice their religion and we could practice ours. We were supposed to be a big pot of vegetable soup. Each ingredients different but coming together to make something good.  Now we see ourselves as m & m"s.  All those colors but when they go into the melting pot they blend and all you see is milk chocolate. We think if we see someone praying to a God we don't worship in public that they must be stopped so we all blend. Or that they are trying to impose those beliefs on us. We were intended to be a country of vegetable soup with all kinds of different cultures and religions present. Saying people can't show their religious beliefs in public is like vegetable soup broth without any vegetables.  Without the vegetables the soup is bland and isn't nutritious. Just like you get different and good things (nutrients) out of each vegetable, you get different and good things from each culture and religion that influences the country.

Speak It To Life

          People do not understand the power of words. Everyone has that tiny voice in their heads. All day long it whispers your subconscious thoughts to you. If you are insecure about your weight, it tells you that you are fat and have a hard time getting down on the floor and back up again. If you lack confidence in hand eye coordination, it tells you that you can't dance or play catch well. Have you ever sang the jingle for some product? Those companies strive to make the jingle stick in your head for a reason.

          Have you ever thought about using the power of your words to your advantage? You may not be Christian but this is just an example.. God said let there be light and there was light. Kenneth Copeland did a sermon once talking about the power of your words. He said that the power of God was manifested in his words. If God said dog, a dog would appear. If he said a Dalmatian dog with one leg shorter than the others and a long fluffy tail, that is what would appear. (Not his exact words but you get the point.) I believe the same is true for us! If you speak that you are a great dancer you will become one. I believe that all these years you have been brainwashed by that negative voice repeating things to you. All you have to do it speak the opposite enough and that will become the reality! So speak positive into your life!
